Climate Services

“Broadly speaking, climate services cover the transformation of climate-related data into customized products and solutions that may be of use for the society at large…”

The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shown very clearly that collective, urgent action is needed to keep the planet’s climate within tolerable levels of warming. A temperature increase beyond 2°C will put serious stress on human health, will impact food production, will disrupting water supplies and damage property/infrastructure. The estimated annual economic losses could be between 0.2 % to 2 %, rising with more warming.

Customized climate-related tools, products and information will enable climate-smart, strategic decisions to build resilience to climate change.  Our team of experts responds to user needs for scientifically credible information about a) historical climate variability, b) the expected climate change in our region, c) current and future vulnerability of regions and sectors, and d) tools that support adaptation strategies. We have developed tools for seasonal climate outlooks tailored to different sectors (e.g. tourism) and decadal climate projections under different future socioeconomic pathways. The PANGEA Observatory at Antikythera Island serves as the core hub of our extended observational network for climate monitoring and evaluation and quality assurance of our products and services.

On seasonal scale we make use of the Copernicus seasonal prediction system (C3S) and the added value of downscaling methods to provide high quality estimates of the climate up to 3 months ahead. On the time scales of climate change we provide tools and data based on the CMIP6 global climate models, the CORDEX regional simulations and our WRF based simulations to provide authoritative information on the expected impacts of climate change so as to help organizations to enable mitigation and adaptation strategies and gain a competitive edge.

Services

  • Ready to use climate projections
  • Ready to use downscaled seasonal outlooks
  • On demand high-resolution (up to 1 km) downscaled climate projections and climate indices tailored to sectorial needs

About Us

ReACT stands for “Remote sensing of Aerosols, Clouds and Trace gases”, to describe the research focus of the respective research team led by Dr. Vassilis Amiridis. ReACT consists of highly motivated scientists within the field of Atmospheric Sciences, combining a number of Post-doc researchers, Ph.D. and M.Sc. students as well as other research and technical staff, using the resources, infrastructure and experience of the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS).
