The selection of Dr. Vassilis Amiridis, PI of NOA-ReACT Team, by the European Space Agency (ESA) as a member of the Aeolus Advisory Group (SAG) will be key to advise ESA on new scientific developments relevant to the mission, improvements and evolution of the Aeolus data processing and L2 data products, the scientific exploitation of the products and scientific aspects of the preparations for a potential Aeolus follow-up .
SAG is the core consulting team for the Aeolus mission.
The Aeolus mission is the first Doppler Lidar in space to provide us with three-dimensional wind fields to improve weather forecasts. The data is already used by ECMWF, while the mission is among the top 3 in terms of innovation and utility.
NOA/IAASARS has a strong participation in Aeolus' actions, both in terms of its scientific utilization and in verifying the mission data. In particular, NOA will be responsible for the operation of the EVE ground reconnaissance system for Aeolus, which is being developed by Raymetrics S.A. under the supervision of the ReACT team. Also, the ReACT team is preparing the ASKOS experiment in Cape Verde this summer.
