Team ReACT in the Atlantic - EarthCARE ATLID: Peristera Paschou

Team ReACT is on the move! Our passionate researchers are not just analyzing complex data in the lab—they get out there! Our colleague, Peristera Paschou, is out in the Atlantic, showing that groundbreaking science means hitting the field, traveling the oceans (and sometimes even taking to the skies).

Peristera is aboard the METEOR German Research Vessel as part of the Bow-Tie campaign. Operating advanced lidar technology from the Max Planck Institute, she is working to validate new ATLID datasets provided by the EarthCARE satellite mission.

With oceans covering 70% of our planet, yet most measurement stations based on land, there's a critical need for high-resolution data from these vast, under-studied regions. Onboard scientists like Peristera play a vital role in bridging this data gap, enhancing our understanding of these complex dynamics.

These missions are more than just data collection—they represent a collaborative effort that unites scientists across disciplines like biology, geology, and oceanography, driving forward our understanding of the Earth’s systems.

Kudos to Peristera and all the scientists who go the extra (nautical) mile to deepen our knowledge of the world!

About Us

ReACT stands for “Remote sensing of Aerosols, Clouds and Trace gases”, to describe the research focus of the respective research team led by Dr. Vassilis Amiridis. ReACT consists of highly motivated scientists within the field of Atmospheric Sciences, combining a number of Post-doc researchers, Ph.D. and M.Sc. students as well as other research and technical staff, using the resources, infrastructure and experience of the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS).
