Dr Voudouri Kalliopi Artemis (KAV) finished her PhD in the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2019. With more than 9 years of experience, she is an expert in performing measurements with lidar systems including systematic calibration, and maintenance. Her main scientific interests lie in the field of Atmospheric Environment and Physics of Atmosphere, and more specifically on aerosol geometrical/optical properties, using ground-based data from active and passive remote sensing. Through her participation in more than 5 scientific projects, she has developed a 9 year long working relationship. In total, she has co-authored 11 publications in peer-
reviewed journals (4 out of 11 as first author) and over 50 in proceedings of international scientific conferences (22 of which as a first author). She serves as a peer reviewer for 3 scientific journals and she has co-supervised 6 master Thesis. She has also participated in total 7 experimental campaigns (e.g, PRE-TECT, COVID-19 NRT lidar measurement campaign, 1st PANACEA Measurement campaign summer 2019, 2nd PANACEA Measurement campaign winter 2020), being responsible for the data aquision and the lidar processing and has participated in the organizing committee of the 1st European Lidar Conference.

Her expertise and collaboration skills have been recognized from ACTRIS/EARLINET, assigning her to lead the Working Group on aerosol typing and characterization through the organization and consolidation of the EARLINET remote sensing community.

Vasileios Barlakas



Vasileios Barlakas (VB) was born in 1986 in Thessaloniki, Greece. He received his BSc in Physics and his MSc in Environmental Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2012, VB moved to Germany (Leipzig) to do his PhD in light scattering theory at the Leibniz-Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS). His dissertation involved the development of a three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer model, including polarization, and its application to scientific issues with an emphasis on optical heterogeneities. After his PhD, VB worked as a researcher at TROPOS,  wherein he focused on evaluating the performance of atmospheric models to simulate clouds by utilising observations from different satellite sensors. As of 1 February 2019, his EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological) fellowship, hosted by the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden (Gothenburg), is ongoing. His main goal concerns the improvement of microwave (MW) radiative transfer simulations in all-sky conditions, either as part of stand-alone retrievals or data assimilation. A special emphasis is given to the upcoming satellite mission of ICI (Ice Cloud Imager) that will operate at microwave/sub-millimetre frequencies and hence, offering some distinct advantages for sounding of cloud ice properties.

Pavlos Kollias 



Pavlos Kollias is a Professor at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University – State University of New York and has a joint appointment with the Department of Environmental and Climate Sciences at Brookhaven National Laboratory. His research focuses on the understanding of the microphysical, dynamical and radiative processes that act at the cloud- and meso-scale and their accurate representation in numerical models. He is also interested in radar technology and the development and application of novel phased-array and spaceborne radars in weather and climate research. Kollias is an international leader in the application of radars for cloud and precipitation research from ground-based and space-based platforms. Kollias has published over 140 peer-reviewed scientific articles in the areas of millimeter wavelength radar research, radar technology, signal processing and cloud and precipitation dynamics and microphysics.


Pavlos Kollias is the Director of the Center for Multiscale Applied Sensing (CMAS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (www.bnl.gov/cmas). He is a member of the Mission Advisory Group and algorithm development team of the European Space Agency Earth Clouds Aerosols Radiation Experiment (EARTHCARE) Explorer Mission. He has served as a member at the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere. Kollias also served for three years (2007-2009) as Associate Chief Scientist for the US DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurements (ARM) program. He has served as the Chair of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Committee on Radar Meteorology and has organized and chaired numerous sessions in international conferences. Kollias has also organized and participated as guest lecturer in several short courses in Europe, North America and Asia on the use of radars in atmospheric research.
